We’re stepping out of our usual cadence to bring you a special set from four visionary performers whose musical explorations span jazz, punk rock, psychedelia, and Americana presenting their take on works by musical pioneer Ornette Coleman, plus an opening set from Glue Binger, a trio of talented emerging players making the kind of high energy freely improvised music we all crave.
Set One - 8:00pm
Glue Binger:
Adam Hernandez - bass
Brody Scott - woodwinds
Anton Iakukhin - drums
Set Two - 9:00pm
Mike Baggetta - guitar
Joe Baiza - guitar
Matt Crane - drums
Steuart Liebig - bass
Guitarist Mike Baggetta lives out east, but has deep connections to our local scene, most recently and notably with his band mssv. Vernacular regulars will recognize and prick up their ears at the names Joe Baiza, Matt Crane, and Steuart Liebig. This powerhouse quartet promises unique guitar-forward interpretations of Coleman’s music.
A ground-breaking and visionary saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Coleman’s music continues to challenge, inspire, and present new possibilities, even as it’s basic premise and vocabulary has been integrated into common language of jazz.
Opening the evening are a trio that I'm excited to hear; drummer Anton Iakukhin turned in an impressive Vernacular set with Mason Moy and Jakob Wolff, the trio played with an infectious energy and casual aesthetic that made me think of a rock power trio at times. Bassist Adam Hernandez and sax played Brody Scott are new to me, but I've been consistently overwhelmed by this emerging generation of local artists, so I'm confident you'll enjoy discovering yet more players to keep your ears attuned to in the coming years.
Donation $10; no one turned away for lack of funds.
